The underlying geography, physical features and history have set out how your city, town or place functions. Human intervention has then, to some extent attempted to direct the economy, sometimes successfully, other times not. The position of the city within the local hierarchy of economic nodes, each fighting for resource and competing against its neighbour also determines economic performance.
